Many newbie’s start surfing the ocean without first learning about surfing safety. The ocean is a vast, wide open sea of different currents and hazards that can come along at any time. There is no way to know what the future holds in store for you on the ocean. However, learning as much as you can about surf safety is the best thing you can do. Here are a few tips to keep you safe when surfing….

The golden rule of surfing safety never goes surfing alone: Always take along a friend. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses and being alert at all times is the best way to remain safe when surfing the ocean. Surfing schools offer many classes on surfing the ocean. Surfers should always wear a life jacket when surfing. However, this is not always the case. If a life jacket would become untied in an ocean or windsurfer was to fall into the water, it could prove to be very difficult for rescue attempts to be successful. Life vests should always be worn by anyone who is planning on surfing the ocean. Additionally, wear an approved helmet that has straps that will allow for the neck to hang in a natural position instead of riding up and down on the head. No matter where you surf, if you are surfing on public beaches, it is essential that you respect the local water safety regulations by adhering to a “no surfing allowed” sign.

It never hurts to take a surfing class and watch a few swimmers do their warm-ups. The warm-up exercises that are done before a surfing competition is just as important as the actual competition itself. A beginner should always surf in comfortable clothing and always surf in warm-up clothes. For example, a novice who is just learning to surf should wear soft-soled shoes, wide-brimmed hats with open-brimmed shades, sunscreen and a full-length bib. This gives the rider the opportunity to build up body heat, while at the same time help the body absorb the impact from waves with less discomfort.

When a person goes surfing, they should always go with a friend. Surfing can sometimes feel lonely, especially for someone who has been surfing for several years. Going alone can also be dangerous. If you’re surfing with a friend, they can stay nearby in case of an emergency. Also, when going surfing alone, don’t go alone, set up a destination for your surfing safety and plan on spending some time on the beach with your friend.

Finally, always wear a helmet to increase your surfing safety. A helmet will protect your head in case of an impact or fall. Also, it will protect your ears, lips and other parts of your body. Always wear a life jacket as well as taking extra care not to fall when surfing.
